Hurricane Harvey has brought me to my knees, and I don’t even live in Texas. After witnessing devastation and hopelessness this week, and watching last month’s huge fires out west, destroy EVERYTHING in its path…I decided it’s important to look around to determine what is truly relevant to my life today. I’m placing the following items in folders, in a plastic bin to leave in my closet.
- My will, passport and copy of my driver’s license
- Checking, Savings, bank account and insurance numbers
- Precious family pictures
- 2nd set of car and house keys
- A list of additional items I’ll need like my journal, computer, etc.
QUESTION: What would you take with you? What would you miss if it were destroyed? What’s in your storage bins and your garage that’s near and dear to your heart? What would you grab if you have only 10 minutes to get out? See where I’m going with this? Are you holding on to too much stuff?
Hear me, I understand that 10 minutes isn’t a lot of time to gather much of anything. But maybe it’s time to downsize. Maybe it’s no longer necessary to pay the storage fee. Or have a bedroom that is full of stuff. Or have memorabilia that could be in a museum for safe keeping and people could enjoy.
Just look around and imagine you’re living in Houston and right this second you’re waiting to be rescued. What will you wish you had done, so your sense of loss might not be so great?
Stuff is just that…STUFF! You only have to protect memories.
