….my running shoes! I began running about 12 years ago. I didn’t have health insurance, at the time, and it seemed to me that running would at least have me outside soaking up vitamin D and keep my heart beating. I actually learned to love running and will miss it tremendously. But the pain in my back and neck is only going to get worse so I need to pay attention and take care of me.
I’m choosing to no longer run, not because of my age, but because I don’t want to do any more damage to my body. The freedom to make decisions based solely on what is best for me is gratifying. I hope, you too, are putting your health first, no matter what age you are.
I hear lots of people say, “I have health insurance so it doesn’t matter that I smoke, overeat etc…” or “I have to die of something” or “I just can’t stop…” You create your own reality with your thoughts and words. If your body fails you, where will you live? We all have so much to offer and do our best work when our mind, body and spirit are in alignment. It’s all connected. Don’t stop moving because you can’t do what you used to do. I now look forward to walking in the still of early morning, working with my personal trainer and begin practicing Hot Yoga in the fall.
There’s a great article in the June/July issue of AARP, page 17, titled “Why Walk? The emotional and physical benefits of taking a stroll”. You owe it to yourself to keep your health your number one priority. (Here is another great AARP article about walking and meditation.)
There are so many options available for you to move and have fun too. What’s your movement of choice? Water aerobics, Tai Chi, cycling, elliptical machine, tennis, line dancing? Choose something and give it 90 days before deciding if you’ll continue or move to something else. And share your experience with me. #ritaat70
